Alaska Death Records
In Alaska, death records are managed by the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. This information is not available to the public until 50 years after the event. Death records are available online by contacting a website which can access them from an online database.
Restrictions on Who Can Order Alaska Death Records
- – These types of vital records can be ordered by the following people:
- Deceased’s spouse, child, parent or sibling
Legal representative of the deceased
Someone who needs the death certificate to determine property rights
Siblings placing an order for an AK death record will need to provide a copy of their birth certificate indicating they share one or both parents with the deceased. Legal representatives must include a letter indicating who they represent and how that person is related to the deceased.
Identification Required to Order an Alaska Death Record
The following forms of ID are accepted when ordering AK death records:
- – U.S. issued driver’s license
- – Current U.S. or foreign passport
- – U.S military ID card (active duty, veteran or dependent)
- – Tribal identification card
Fees for Ordering Alaska Death Records
A $25.00 search fee is charged for a first copy of a death record. Additional copies of the same record cost $20.00 each. The fee is non-refundable once the order has been received and processed. If you have requested multiple copies of the record, the fee for the second and subsequent records will be refunded if the record is not located.

Order an Alaska Death Record by Mail
You can order a copy of an Alaska death record by mailing your request and the required fee to one of the offices listed above. Be sure to include a photocopy of your identification, since incomplete orders cannot be processed. Orders received by mail will be processed within two or three weeks after receipt.
Order an Alaska Death Record by Fax
The state will accept fax orders for death records. Send your request to (907) 465.3618, including your credit card information and a copy of your photo ID. These orders will be processed on an expedited basis, usually within three working days after receipt. If you decide to send in your order by fax, call the Bureau of Vital Statistics at (907) 465-3391 to confirm receipt.
