The Connecticut Vital Records Office maintains records of deaths occurring from July 1, 1897 to the present. Connecticut death records can be ordered from the Vital Records Office of the town where the person died or the state Vital Records Office. Another option is to place an order with a website which specializes in providing this type of information.


Who Can Order a Connecticut Death Record

Certified copies of Connecticut death records may be ordered by anyone over the age of 18. The record will indicate the date of death, but the deceased Social Security Number (SSN) will only appear on a record ordered by an immediate family member (the deceased’s spouse or next of kin).

Fee for CT Death Records

The fee to order a certified copy of a death record in CT is $30.00 per copy. Full size and wallet-sized copies may be ordered at the same cost. Money orders made payable to “Treasurer, State of CT,” are accepted.


ID Required to Order Death Record in Connecticut

Anyone requesting a CT death record must provide a copy of his or her photo ID when placing the order. People who do not have photo ID can provide a copy of two of the following:

  • Social Security card
  • Vehicle registration card
  • Voter’s Registration card
  • Letter from an employer confirming the requestor’s identity
  • Copy of a utility bill indicating the requestor’s name and address

The state Vital Records Office accepts orders for CT death records by mail. The processing time for records ordered from this office is approximately six weeks from the date of receipt.
